Healthy Advertising Habits

Advertising has a nasty habit of sucking people in and keeping them in forcing them to have a set of unhealthy professional habits leading to it invading personal life and identity.

The result can be one posting more ‘advertising’ content on their own social media, reading more marketing books, and even listening to advertising podcasts to ‘be better’.

However, I disagree with this way of working. It’s a bit like working out, to get stronger or fitter doesn’t mean just working out all the time but to have breaks, stretching, nutrition etc. to get and stay fit.

Here are my tips of having those healthy boundaries with Advertising;

1. Keep It Within Working Hours
There is nothing wrong in educating oneself and broadening one’s horizon but keep it during working hours, don’t let it invade and creep into your personal time and space. You can set aside the first hour of each working day for research and education by reading articles and awards case studies to level yourself up but don’t let it take over your own hobbies and interests.

2. Seeing Distance As A Strength
Although you might see your colleagues and peers drown themselves in their work day and night but having distance is key for growth. This distance will keep you fresh and hungry for the next day brief, project, or pitch.

3. Setting You Up For Success
As you move up in your career, you might have a family, hobby, or even a side hustle to think of who need your attention and energy. If you put your energy and effort to advertising, there might not be any left that make you happy and fulfilled. Work is just work, there are other things in your life that give in bigger purpose so give those things your energy as well.
